I became friends with Hendrix because we played on the same bill so many times. One day he called me into the studio, briefly talked me through this blues number called Voodoo Chile, played it once, broke a string on the second take, and the third take was the one on the album. . . . There were no chord sheets, no nothing. He just started playing. It was a one-take job, with him singing and playing at the same time. He had such mastery of the instrument, and he knew what he was, and knew his abilities. I was only in the studio for a couple of hours. It was a great buzz, but you don't always think 'wow' at the time you're actually doing these things. Make no mistake, Jimi was an amazing musician, but I wasn't sitting there thinking - Oh gosh . . . we're all going to be millionaires or this is gonna be remembered in 50 years time. . . .
