When I heard those first notes coming out of this obscure service club at Fort Campbell, I said, “This is something special!” I went in, introduced myself, and it was the start of a friendship that lasted a lifetime, because I heard something that nobody else heard. Jimi played slide guitar, but I can’t recollect him playing in an open tuning. He was ambidextrous, too. He could play his guitar (strung standard for a left-hander), and then take my bass (strung for a right-hander), turn it upside-down, and play the heck out of it. He could also play a regular right-handed guitar without restringing it. . . .
