I grew up with Jimi Hendrix, but I was always listening to (Andres) Segovia and (Julian) Bream, and I learned so much about tone production from them. So when I was playing the rock stuff with the Scorpions, I was literally drawing the sound out of my guitar and amp in. much the same way as the classical players were using their fingers to generate tone. I wanted to show that it's possible to have the music of Jimi Hendrix on one side, and the music of Mozart on the other, each standing right next to the other in some sort of weird brotherhood. I treat Jimi's music with exactly the same respect that I treat the music of Mozart or Beethoven. When it comes to artistic integrity they are on the same level.
