He was enough of a musician and a technician so that he could always make his instrument do something that somebody else thought they could play but couldn’t make theirs do- and do it spontaneously. He could get to that other, spiritual realm that not too many musicians can reach. And yet, before he died everybody was talking about how he couldn’t cut it any more, and how this guy or that guy was better than him, all that kind of crap. Then when he died, all of a sudden-Jimi Hendrix is the best. Which he was, but all along. ...I’ve always felt that is about the closest a human being playing guitar can get to the hands of God without being God. When I listen to it, sometimes it puts tears in my eyes.
