Now we’re in the age of chops. Everybody’s doing hammer-ons and ten-fingered stuff, playing a lot of scales. But chops is the easy part of it. Playing from the heart is what’s really difficult. You know, really playing from your heart of hearts. That’s what Hendrix had, aside from his great imagination and his amazing technique and his great rhythmic approach. There’s just a certain quality to his playing... people call it soulfulness or whatever... that’s there. That comes from inside, where you’re tapping something magical. And that is what’s hard.
