Jimi Hendrix was the very first rock/pop guitarist to make any impact on me. Here was a player with limited technical ability, but with all the fire and imagination of a Django Reinhardt. He was able to use the new electronic devices (wah-wah, etc.) with controlled effect. On one instrumental, “Love Love”, recorded early in his career, you can hear all of today’s jazz-rock devices, the repeated bass figure and augmented 9th chords, which are all too popular today. My advice to any aspiring guitarist in this field would be: Don’t copy, but try to explore with depth, control, and fire all the new avenues that Jimi Hendrix opened up for you.
