‘Hey Joe’ was the first big single that had the effect of being very musically adventurous. . . . They gave him a hard image in spite of the fact that he was dressed pretty weird. I don’t know that the public initially recognized him for his guitar playing so much, although there were a cadre of people who’d been into Clapton and the blues scene that drew on that. I think that the mass populace had the overall image of the wild man.
