I know where to go as a guitar player — I know what guitar to grab and what to play through. But I don't know why; I just know that if I play this guitar through this amp, and play with the right kind of dynamics, I will be able to express what I need to express. To my mind, the person that was the absolute best at that was Jimi Hendrix. There's no one better. He could express every emotion, every thought, every instinct — he could express the majestic quality of something through his tone, and it was always just perfect for whatever song he was playing on. I think he knew a lot about the mechanics of tone along with his incredible intuition.
