With Hendrix, in the space of a long solo, there would be these paragraphs of sound. The question is, how can you go through a long, improvisational solo without it being boring? Hendrix spoke in paragraphs; there would be a two minute period of some kind of musical event and then, texturally, it would change. A good example would be ‘Machine Gun’ on Hendrix’s ‘Band of Gypsys’ which is probably my favorite album of all time. ...He does this long, descending, sinking-in-the-mud thing, and then he clicks on the wah-wah pedal and it completely changes. It’s almost like it was broken into paragraphs like a good speech or piece of literature.
